The sermon series entitled Exalting His Name was delivered from November 22, 2020 to February 28, 2021.
We followed up our time in Hebrews with a 7 week journey through Malachi. The message of Malachi integrates nicely with the message of Hebrews and there’s an underlying advent theme appropriate for the time of year. Hebrews was written that we may worship God in a manner well pleasing with reverence and fear (Hebrews 12:28). Malachi was written for those who fear the LORD and who esteem His name (Malachi 3:16). It is from this verse that we get the title for this sermon series; Esteeming His Name.
The conditions against which Malachi wrote are strikingly similar to those in the church of our day. The Messianic age had been long anticipated but had not begun and some wept (2:13) while others were cynical (1:2; 2:17). In their case they were looking for the first Advent, we are looking for the second. Unethical behavior was common (3:5), and organized religion was held in contempt because of the actions of those who called themselves the people of God (1:14; 3:7-12). For the most part, these were the people of God in name only. Their lives showed that their hearts were far from Him. Malachi is a message from a faithful and loving God to a discouraged and suffering people on the verge of giving up. Malachi speaks as much to the church today as it did to its original audience
